Although our calendar, following the pattern of the first edition of 1982, is designed to include namedays of popular first names of all age groups (the median age in the U.S. is about 40), we show, in 2 special index pages, among all the 3000 first names, the rankings of the 500 most popular baby names for both genders in 2004. Each index entry of those names contains the name, its nameday and its numerical ranking in parenthesis. The rankings are based on the Social Security Administration's data (2004) for births in the United States. While there are altogether 130 cross-gender names in the calendar, interestingly, these 12 particular names below are so popular both as female and male names that they are among the top 500 most popular in both categories in 2004.
When you click below on either FEMALE names or MALE names, you will be taken to the page from which you can search for names and their namedays either... 1. Alphabetically by Letter, or 2. Using your browser's SEARCH function, by Name. Incidentally, one nice feature in using your browser's Search function is that at the same time you will see ("at-a-glance") many similar names with their namedays. Here's how it works (for Female Names in this example): (The example here is for Internet Explorer. Netscape and the other browsers work similarly)
1. Select " Edit". "Find". 3. A dialogue box will pop up. To find the name "Alexis", type it in the box "Find what:". 4. Check mark the box "Match Whole Word Only". 5. Click on "Find Next". 6. The browser will locate the part of the "A" section of the index where "Alexis" is listed.
Your browser will highlight "Alexis". The red number (11) indicates that Alexis was the 11th most popular baby name for girls in 2004. The blue number (103) means that Alexis was the 103rd most popular name for boys in 2004. If you are interested in popularity of baby names, a wide variety of statistics on most popular baby names, including the top 1000 names of each decade of the last century, can be found at the SSA's website www.ssa.gov. It should be noted, however, that in the SSA's data, different spellings of similar names are not combined, each name variation is considered a separate name. |
